God's Word is Sweet

The next time you find yourself trying to resist dessert and you need a little help from a great Bible verse as a sword, turn to Psalm 119:103.

"How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (Psalm 119:103 NIV)

Wouldn't it be great turn to God's word instead of a sweet dessert? Remember, His word is truly sawheet!

Block temptation with your shield

Here I am at a Chief's football game tailgating with my brother and his wife and kids, along with my husband and kids, and my nephew and his wife. I'm surrounded by family, enjoying the outdoor air. Life is good. My favorite part about tailgating is that someone else cooks. My husband and his nephew Joel pull out all the equipment, the cookstove, the chairs, the coolers, the tent with sides to keep the rain out. They also bring all the ingredients and cook up breakfast of hashbrowns and eggs. They grill steaks, but since I'm a vegetarian, we put on the Morning Star Farm breakfast links for me and my kids. It's a treat to have men do the cooking. (Okay, I did contribute by making a 7-layer bean dip the night before to bring along.)

My least favorite part is the Oreo cookies and the chocolate chip cookies. Here comes that annoying temptation again. To fight against this, I use the armor of God. I visualize myself holding up my shield of faith to put the shield between me and the temptation. Don't get those cookies near me. I've got my shield up, you know. This is all a battle in my mind. Nobody else knows I'm holding up my shield. But it's a powerful shield when I pray while I'm holding it up. It keeps the temptation from taking over. I love the shield of faith. It reminds me that I have faith that God's way is better, that taking care of my body is better than not, that I believe God when he says he will reward me for being faithful.

You, too, can use the shield of faith when you find yourself in the heat of temptation. The shield is a very effective piece of God's armor.
